How to choose the fish species to rear in Aquaponics?
Why Tilapia is the main reared species in commercial-scale aquaponic facilities?
Which opportunities the breeding of euryhaline species like the European Lobster can open up?
First of all, you have to take into account the water temperature ranges that crustacean or fish species to rear can tolerate. In fact, water temperature is a key element to the functioning of an aquaponic system. For the reason that the population of nitrifying bacteria in the growbeds require certain temperature to efficiently work. Hence converting fish excreta into nutrients for plants, purifying water. Likewise the welfare of stocked fish or crustacean depends on water conditions and quality.
So an acceptable water temperature both for aquatic animals and nitrifying bacteria ranges from 15°C (59°F) to 28°C (82.4°F). Obviously, lower is the temperature slower is the filtering operation of bacteria. Therefore it’s important to understand that the water temperature of your fish/crustacean tank will result from an arrangement between animals’ and bacteria’s requirements.
In this lesson of our Aquaponics Manual we outline the main features to take into consideration when you choose the animals to rear in Aquaponics. Beginning with some example of the mostly reared fish species world-widely like Tilapia. Similarly we display the characteristics of fish and crustacean species that make them a suitable opportunity for aquaponic farming and even Marine Aquaponics.
Indeed some of these species (like Sea bass) are euryhaline. That means that they are able to adapt to a wide range of water salinity levels. Consequently it’s possible to raise them in brackish water.
