Day 9 & 10

How to optimize your aquaponic systems

A gradual adjustment of the psycho-chemical parameters as well as of the farming conditions is crucial to optimize your aquaponic systems. Particularly at the earlier stages of their production activity. Since the system requires time to settle on steady balances. Such as between fish/crayfish and plant density, amount of water and growbed area. In other words, enhancing the efficiency of your Aquaponics facility is fully a matter of calibration.

At the moment we’re dealing with the flaws that usually occur at the start-up phase of whatever Aquaponics facility. Furthermore, we’re carrying on an experimentation of smarter aquaponic system designs that require a lower initial investment for the construction and maximize the production per square meter of the greenhouse area. And of course, this implies proceeding through trial and errors ever based on our expert know-how. The same applies to our attempts of mixing different fish species with crayfish all stocked in our third system.

Nevertheless, no matter how much time is lasted the period of adjustment, the only way to optimize your aquaponic systems consists in a daily recording of the variations of the factors that affect the optimal operability of the systems.

First greenhouse

Seedlings planted:

  • 4 Red Gentilina Lettuce in the growbed of the first system
  • 4 Celery in the growbed of the first system
  • 2 Topepo Pepper in the growbed of the first system
  • 1 Cayenne Pepper in the growbed of the second system
  • 2 Topepo Rosso Sweet Pepper in the growbed of the second system
  • 1 Cayenne Pepper in the growbed of the third system
  • 1 Topepo pepper on a floating raft in the third system

Ripening of veggies:

  • First Zucchini plant in the growbed of the first system -> 6.5-cm Squash Blossom turned yellow

Harvest:

  •  3 Friggitello in the growbed of the third system

Management operations:

  • Put 2 small plastic glasses of beer in the growbed of the first system and 1 in the third system = natural measure against slugs and snails

First greenhouse

Seedlings planted:

Ripening of veggies:

  • First Zucchini plant in the growbed of the first system -> 6.5-cm Squash blossom flourished
  • Third Zucchini plant in the growbed of the first system -> A Squash blossom turned yellow

Mortality Rate:

  • 1 dead Koi Carp in the first system -> under-sized specimen compared to the other Koi carps that we have reared together in the same tank for 1 year
  • 2 dead Sarasa Comet Goldfish in the third system <= cause: nitrite poisoning due to the shipment

Management operations:

  • Adjusting of the length of the drainage pipe in the second system => to prevent the flooding of the growbed
  • Folding of the sunshade tarp that covers the greenhouse =>to improve the daily exposure of the veggies to sunlight(=> increase of their growth rate)-> risk: rising of the temperature levels inside the greenhouse = dangerous for the well-being of fish and crayfish
  • Higher nitrite concentration in the third system => Addition of fresh and colder water to dilute it => collateral effect: artificial breeding induction of the stocked Goldfish
  • Introduction of a stem into the third system => Goldfish spawn under the leaves => it’s an easy way to collect the eggs => to avoid that fish and crayfish eat them
  • The placement of the stem with the just spawned eggs inside a separate tank full of water
  • Pruning of the Melon grown in the second system from the leaves that are worst damaged by the aphids
  • Making and use of an organic vinegar-based spray against the aphids on the first and second system
  • Construction of a framework for the Tomato plants grown on the floating rafts in the third system

Second greenhouse

Veggies planted:

  • 7 Romaine Lettuce in the fourth growbed of the first system
  • 8 Red Gentilina Lettuce in the fourth growbed of the first system
  • 2 Red Gentilina Lettuce in the sixth growbed of the first system
  • 4 Red Gentilina Lettuce in the eighth growbed of the first system
  • 1 Swiss Chard in the fourth growbed of the first system
  • 4 Swiss Chard in the eight growbed of the first system
  • 4 Titan Parsley in the fourth growbed of the first system
